Kehf, 18/7)
"Kalpler ancak Allah'ı anmakla huzur bulur." (Ra'd, 13/28)
Hz. Muhammed (s.a.v.)
Jurgen Habermas’a göre modernite üç konuda eksik kalmıştır:
“Dinden anlam transferi yapabilir.”
Why Can't the One Who Can't Hold On Hold On?
Oğuz Atay describes those who cannot hold on to life as follows:
“He has always ‘rushed’ throughout his life; and for this reason, he has always been ‘late.’ There is a constant panic in his life: while reading a book or watching a comedy, he grows weary. When he is with others, he cannot convey his troubles; he becomes flustered and gets hurt.” (Oğuz Atay, *Tutunamayanlar* [The Disconnected], p. 8.)
For a soul sent to this world—in a temporary body and for a temporary period of testing—to truly cling to anything is, in fact, contrary to the nature of things.
One must instead hold fast to the ropes extended from beyond this world and complete this life by swinging upon them, as it were.
A human being is born into a mathematical equation where the world is the numerator and the Hereafter is the denominator.
One who fails to take the Hereafter into account can never resolve this equation nor find a foothold.
The Holy Quran states:
“We have made what is on the earth an adornment for its people, that We may test which of them is best in deed.” (Al-Kahf, 18/7)
"Hearts find peace only in the remembrance of Allah." (Ar-Ra'd, 13/28)
With the words, "Remember death often—that which turns pleasures into true pleasure," Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) draws attention to the fact that the world is the numerator and the Hereafter—which completes it—is the denominator.
So, how is it possible to hold fast to this world by making the Hereafter a stake in it?
In the world established by Allah to determine who acts best (Mulk, 67/2), the path to success is described in the Holy Quran as holding fast to the Divine Names (*al-Asma*).
One must know oneself well and strive to become a mirror to the Divine Names that align with one’s innate nature (*fitra*), thereby holding fast to those Names.
In a world of constant change and transformation, those who fail to connect—through His Names—to a stable and unchanging Being cannot hold their ground; they slip away.
The material successes achieved by the West over the last three centuries have not brought spiritual peace and well-being.
Beyond the deaths of over 100 million people in two world wars, this approach has also led to serious issues regarding individual peace and happiness.
Many thinkers grappling with this situation have observed that people are unable to find a firm footing because matters are addressed solely in the context of the material (the worldly) while the realm of meaning (the Hereafter) is neglected; they have offered solutions based on this insight.
Let us begin by considering an observation made by a Western thinker.
According to Jürgen Habermas, modernity has fallen short in three respects:
1. It has failed to articulate a sense of meaning or purpose.
2. It has failed to craft a narrative regarding the human condition.
3. It has attempted to explain everything in economic terms.
Following this assessment and critique, Habermas offers the following recommendation for addressing these three major shortcomings of modernity:
“It can derive meaning from religion.”
Islam has proposed a system of peace and happiness that encompasses both the human soul and body.
At the core and center of this system lies the act of connecting to the Transcendent Being—Allah—through His Divine Names; it involves traversing the world joyfully—like riding a swing—sustained by bonds of love and respect for Him, ultimately returning to one’s true homeland: Paradise.
Those who fail to connect with Allah through His Divine Names cannot hold their ground; for the world acts like a quagmire, dragging down and drowning any human being who lacks the support of a Higher Power.
Let every individual who fails to find a foothold in this world, who cannot find happiness, and who complains about life’s circumstances and their surroundings, first turn inward and examine themselves.
Have they established a solid connection by clinging to Allah and His Divine Names?
Or do they continue to thrash about in the quagmire of the world?
Remember!
Thrashing about in a swamp only hastens your sinking!
Therefore, let those seeking happiness in this world and the Hereafter focus not on the outside, but on themselves.
Let them not forget that salvation begins and ends within the self.
Let the soul—the essence of love—cling to those ropes of Divine Names extended by Allah that align with its innate nature.
We began our piece with a quote from Oğuz Atay; let us conclude with one as well:
"If I were asked, 'What should be done today?', I could only say, 'First, you must set yourself right.' The fundamental principle is this: A person who cannot resolve their own inner self cannot solve any problem outside of it." (Tutunamayanlar, Oğuz Atay, 95.)
